Instagram – A How-To For Bloggers

If you’ve delved into your Google Analytics, you might find you don’t get much, if any, traffic from Instagram. But don’t let that stop you from curating pretty images for your followers. Instagram is an amazing and personal way to share your life with your blog followers and give them a look behind the scenes. By seeing a photo or two a day from you, your followers will start to get to know you and look forward to your posts, and you will stay top of mind for them.

Personally I don’t click on the live link for brands or other bloggers from my phone very often but the way I see it, that’s not the point of Instagram. That’s why I don’t like to blatently promote my blog on Instagram very often. Instagram is more about building relationships which in turns helps build loyalty to your brand.

Whether you’re a seasoned Instagram vet or you’ve just taken the plunge, take a peek at some of my tried and true tips for making your Instagram account work for you.

1. Follow other bloggers.

Lifestyle and mommy bloggers are all over Instagram. Some of my favourite bloggers to follow are Kyla from House of Hipsters and Jessica Garvin from Little Baby Garvin. Their feeds are chalk full of drool-worthy pictures that will inspire you to be a better blogger, I swear.

2. Share your world.

I like to think of Instagram as the Pinterest board of my actual life! As bloggers, we love sharing photos of our projects but readers want to get to know the real you, too! Share your lazy Sunday or give a sneak peak at an upcoming project.

3. Leave thoughtful comments.

Just like you would comment on a blog post, comment on other bloggers and brands images. Believe me, comments don’t go unnoticed. A lot of the partnerships I’ve formed through my blog blossomed out of interacting on Instagram.

4. Tag Brands.

When you take pretty stylized pictures of a brand’s products being used in your real life, tag them in it! Brands LOVE using pictures from fans and will often ask you if you don’t mind them sharing them with their fans. This equals a shout out to you to all their fans! You scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours, you know what I mean?

5. Don’t spam.

We get it, you’re doing a giveaway but it’s important to not bug or overload your followers feeds. It’s a thin line to walk between advertising your blog and being too spammy. Unfortunately, if people get the spam vibe from you, you’ll get un-followed.

6. Filters.

Don’t overuse them! When Instagram first hit it big, filters and frames were all the rage but what’s now in vogue is bright, clear, and naturally beautiful pictures. And remember nobody likes Kelvin!

7. Link to your blog.

Instagram gives you a spot in your profile to add a live link — make it a link to your blog! It may seem like a no-brainer but you’d be surprised how many bloggers I’ve seen without a link to their work. And if you really want to maximize that link, try out Link Tree! I use it and I am loving being able to direct people to multiple links.

8. Use hashtags.

But don’t over do it. Find out what hashtags your Instagram role models are using and use those as a starting point. Some of my favorite hashtags in the mommy blogging niche? #makeclothmainstream #normalizeit #wearallthebabies.

9. Don’t over-post.

Instagram isn’t like Facebook — you don’t have to post EVERY photo from your family vacation. I usually don’t post more than 2 times a day and I like to space them out. I’ve definitely unfollowed someone because my feed was getting clogged up by their gym selfies.

10. What do I post?

If you’re stuck, you can never go wrong with a cute baby! They always get a like!

11. Schedule

I love being able to schedule some posts ahead of time. For that, I use an app called Later. With it I’m able to schedule my photos for a certain time of day, which is helpful when I have blog posts going live on certain days and want to let my followers know about them.

  • I love Instagram. It’s such a personal way to get in contact with your blog readers.

You have some lovely tips here.

    Thanks so much for sharing!

    Have a great day!

    • I love Instagram too. I think because we share more personal aspects of our lives that we wouldn’t write about in fear of it being “too boring”, we tend to be more open to the idea of making friends and interacting in a more personal way.

Thanks so much for stopping by, Jen!

      • Exactly! I love giving people a glimpse of our lives without me writing about it.

Thanks for sharing and for linking up to the #SHINEbloghop.

        Wishing you a lovely weekend.

  • I love Instagram! I agree some people use it waaaaay too much. I work from home, which results in a lot of stylized shots of my hot tea, since that’s often all I have to share.

    • Stylized tea or coffee shots are among my faves! Thanks so much for stopping by <3

  • Monica Geglio

This is the first article I’ve read about Instagram. It’s one of my favorite social media networks because I do build relationships effortlessly. My Instagram is filled with people who value vegetarianism, cruelty-free living, cloth diapering, breastfeeding, etc. The bloggers I follow on Instagram are extremely inspiring and help me to stay on track with my “sustainable lifestyle” goals. It’s so easy and fun to make friends via Instagram! I’ve even had someone ask me about guest posting on their blog just because we are constantly interacting with each other’s feeds. 🙂

    • That’s so cool, Monica! It’s amazing the relationships you can forge on Instagram and I think because we tend to share more personal stuff on Instagram like the day to day stuff, we are that much more open to making new friends via Instagram.

Thanks so much for stopping by <3

I do not have instagram at this moment, but these are great tips if I decided to do instagram in the future! Thanks for sharing!

    • I hope these tips come in handy if you ever decide to take the plunge! It can be hard when starting a new platform to know what to do and how it all works!

  • These are great tips! I’ve been a little fuzzy on what to do with my blog’s instagram account.

  • Instagram is one of those things that’s fun, but I have yet to figure out how to translate it into blog traffic! I talk about my blog, and have shown things that pertain to both on my Instagram to get people to come over, but I have no proof that they have. So, I just went back to using as I always have…and if they decide to come to the blog from it, awesome.

    • Yeah, it’s hard to prove people ACTUALLY visited after seeing a post of yours on Instagram, which is kind of a bummer! Thanks for stopping by!

      Stephanie @ Mommyzoid

  • Loved these tips Stephanie! I looove Instagram and I’ve slack off the last couple of months. But I love the community over there and it’s so fun to have “peeks” into other’s everyday lives. I don’t get a lot of traffic from Instagram either BUT I have gained readers from Instagram, so you’re right, it’s definitely important to build community over there!

    • Just because you don’t see traffic, doesn’t mean it isn’t helping! Some of my favourite bloggers will share photos they don’t share on their blog and say, “You can see more on the blog” and I hop onto my computer and check it out. It can be such a community! <3

  • House of Hipsters

Oh my goodness! Lady! You are the sweetest person ever! Thank you so much for the shout out! Sorry for all the exclamations, but I’m just really excited =) Over the last couple months I’ve tried to kinda up my Instagram game. And it’s weird, it’s almost become a separate microblog to my blog. Most of the time completely different things are happening on my Instagram feed. It’s a chance for me to be creative with my camera, surroundings, and just life in general. And I like that. I don’t really have to worry about writing an article to go with the picture or theme. I can just put it out there. I’ve had to put time limits on myself though. I can spend more time perusing IG and can waste the day away.

These are really great tips! And yes, you are right…no one likes Kelvin =)

    • I know what you mean. I literally could waste away an entire day in bed just browsing Instagram, liking away. It’s easy to get lost in all the pretty pictures. I find that SO interesting that it’s become a sort of microblog for you! A blog within a blog. uh muh gawd. Well whatever you’re doing, it’s working for your feed! You post the most GORGEOUS pictures!

When I first find a new blog I might like, I go look at their Instagram feed to see what they are all about! I will definitely be using your tips! Thanks!

  • Betsy @ Happily Ever After Etc

Great tips! I am fairly new to Instagram and trying to get the hang of what’s “too personal” and what’s “spammy over the top blog ads” haha!

  • Hahaha “no body likes Kelvin” that is SO TRUE!! These are all so great. I love it when someone leaves a thoughtful comment on my pictures, not just “nice!” So I will definitely take that to heart. 🙂

Followed! I love your tips. Thank you for stating “do not over-post” I’m not a fan of 1,001 pictures of someone’s day at the park, beach, or at home. I know that sounds snotty, but I feel like that’s something you send to your family or make a collage…right?

  • Some great tips! I’ve had an Instagram account for a couple of years now, but I really just started using it more regularly in 2015. My goal is to develop a habit of taking more pictures in general and sharing them on Instagram, even if they have nothing to do with my blog. Thanks for sharing!
