Can we talk about toddlers and hand washing for two seconds, please? I feel like I’m always either asking him to please wash his hands or to not wipe his dirty face on the clean towels. I know I’m not alone, moms. I’ve been wanting to build a shelf in our main floor powder room for a while now. Something that can function not only as a shelf for some plants and decor but also a spot to stash clean towels so they aren’t in arms reach of my kids.

If I had to define the space, I’d call it feminine boho chic. I’m obsessed with my pink vanity and the touches of navy and gold. But I wanted to bring in more of that boho vibe. I found this pine crate at the craft store for $10 and I was instantly inspired to make it into a shelf.
I mixed up my stain (I used this stain) with a paint stirrer in case there was some separation. I dipped a single-use rag into the stan and got to work. I made sure to give the wood a really good bath in the stain. You want there to be lots of stain on the wood because the wood will suck it all up and absorb it and that’s whats going to give you that lovely color. Staining with a wood stain is different than painting.
I let the crate dry overnight in a well-ventilated space. Once the wood is dry, you can decide if you think the wood needs more stain. I was very happy with the color of my little crate.
When it came time to hang the crate on the wall, we used a level on top of the crate to make sure it wasn’t crooked. Because we have ship-lap installed on the bathroom wall, we didn’t have to find a stud to drill into. We used two 1 1/2 inch screws to secure the shelf.
And there you have it! The perfect little shelfie! It’s the perfect spot to stash our towels, little decor pieces, and anything else you might not want little hands getting into.
My toddler is forever rubbing his snotty little nose and grubby little fingers all over my nice white towels but you know what, he can wipe his adorable little face all over these 100% Organic Cotton Towels by Caribbean Natural and I don’t have to worry about nasty pollutants, harsh dyes or chemicals being rubbed onto him through the towel. ICK! The mother who created this line of towels is a nurse with an autoimmune disorder. She created Caribbean Natural because she wasn’t able to find towels that were high quality and chemical free without a steep price tag.
Now is your chance to get your hands (and entire body!) all over these super soft towels. Enter to win a set of your very own for your family.
