Photography, Florals and Friendship | Mommyzoid

I’ll be honest with you, blogging is a pretty solitary hobby. Which, for me, is one of the main draws. It’s something I can do once the kids are asleep or in small pockets of time throughout the day. It’s how I unwind. But when you have the opportunity to connect with other bloggers in your local community, what was once lonely becomes extremely validating and energizing.

Here in Halifax, a group of bloggers decided to band together and create a space online to meet, chat, ask questions and compare notes. We were all off in our own pockets of the web creating and finding our way, and realized we would be much better off if we to bounced ideas off of each other and helped each other out. Basically, if blogging was a 9-5 office job, this place was our lunch room.

The girls that manage ECM Media have set out to help build us all up, because when one of us succeeds, we all succeed. They organized a Photography & Florals workshop for us to attend in the heart of the North End of Halifax at Dean’s Flowers. Holly from Dean’s Flowers invited us into the studio space and taught as all how to put together a simple flower arrangement. I’m a little clueless when it comes to flower arrangements and I usually just cut off the ends on an angle and stick ’em in a jug of water and call it a day. Did you know florists use this special waterproof tape and make a grid on the top of the vase so each step stays put? I had no idea. This was a genius tip! Dean’s Flowers has been in business since 1919, so I’d say they know a thing or two about flowers!

Thanks to Fujifilm, we were lucky enough to have Matt Corkum of Fade to White Photography come and teach us some tips and tricks on photographing our arrangements, although the principles he taught can be used no matter what you’re photographing. Matt teaches photography at Nova Scotia Community College, which is the same college I studied Radio & Television. The principles used to light a set in TV and light a subject for photography are the same, but he taught us some neat trade secrets for lighting for photography that you couldn’t get away with on TV, like for instance when doing a headshot, the light is extremely close to the subjects face, like right outside the frame!

Another big takeaway for me was getting the settings on my camera right and lighting the subject well when you’re taking the photo instead of trying to fix it in an editing software. I love my photos to look as natural and close to real life as possible, so this is really important for my work.

Photography, Florals and Friendship | Mommyzoid

Matt gave us a little tour of the kind of basic gear that will make our lives easier as bloggers, like this collapsible 5-in-1 reflector disc for bouncing a little light onto the subject. He also showed us the new Fujifilm X-A3 camera! It’s an awesome camera at a really affordable price point. I love the vintage look of it and bonus, it comes in a pink option! HOW CUTE!

The biggest thing I took away from this workshop is how important it is to have a community, no matter what your industry! Being around people who just “get” you is so important. You know you’re in a safe place when you can take a selfie with a Gerber Daisy and you won’t be judged because you look around and everyone else is doing the same thing! I love this little community and I am so thankful to have it. Big things are happening here on the east coast of Canada.

8 Ways You Can Make Money From Home

October 12, 2016

8 ways you can make money from home | Mommyzoid

Most women with small children have this thought. Can I make it work? Could We do this, financially? For some the thought is fleeting. They don’t think it’s for them, they don’t think they could do it, or they aren’t sure it’s possible. But I’m here to tell you there are countless ways you can make money from home. & they aren’t even sleazy!

It all comes down to examining your skill set. What do you do in your existing day job or what did you do before you had kids? Write it down. Maybe you’re wicked on social media, you have a knack for organizing, or you have a hidden talent for graphic design. Write it all down. Now examine that list.

Here is a list of legit ways to make money from home. When reading them try to think about your skill set and see if you have any of these that can transfer over into a lucrative home business.

Home Daycare

Maybe you were a teacher or maybe you worked in a daycare before you had kids of your own. Starting an at home daycare can be a great way to stay home with your own kids in order to save money on childcare costs while still bringing in a few other kids to make some extra money. If you do already have kids of your own you likely have a good lot of toys and things to occupy their time. But taking care of kids is not easy work, as any mom knows. You definitely have to be a certain kind of person to have an in home daycare.

Skills Required: Patience, a love for kids and great organizational skills.

Multi Level Marketing

There are so many different types of companies out there that let women flex their entrepreneurial skills in a safe environment with limited risks to you and your family. Each company is set up differently but generally you make a small investment to give you what you need to start whether that’s access to your own personalized website, some stock to use for home parties, and other marketing materials. Types of products that are being sold through this type of business structure are essential oils like Young Living, hair products like Monat, jewelry like Stella & Dot, nail wraps like Jamberry, food & cook ware like Epicure, makeup, weight loss shakes, clothing and so much more! If this style of business venture appeals to you, there’s a company out there that sells products you’re already passionate about.

Skills Required: Motivation and the ability to work it, whether that’s by hosting home parties or sharing your wares on social media.

Blogging

There are as many different types of blogs as there are people and you can be very successful with sharing what you know via an online platform like a blog. Whether your passion is golf, yoga, or DIYs, you can start a blog about it. Money can be made from placing ads, selling via affiliate links, or through sponsored posts.

Skills Required: A knowledge of whatever you’re passionate about and the technical skills to manage your website successfully.

Crafting

Whether you love to knit to pass the time or you’ve started sewing cloth diapers for your own kids, there is a market for what you’re selling. With online marketplaces like Etsy, you can easily market and sell your products online from the safety of your home. The best part about selling using a company like Etsy is the security with their payment system. You do pay a small fee to list your products and if I recall correctly there is a percentage of the sale that goes to Etsy, but the rest is yours. As a Canadian I found shipping to be challenging for getting my business off the ground, for example I sold a piece I made for $25 and shipping was $12 with tracking. Something to be mindful of when setting your prices. Another way to sell is on local Facebook groups that cater to buying and selling crafts or whatever your particular item is you are selling. There are often local craft fairs that cater toward moms that are always a big hit, especially in my region.

Skills Required: A knack for the arts and crafts, or whatever it is your are creating.

Fitness Instructor/Yoga Teacher

Whether it’s one-on-one personal training or group fitness classes, people are always looking to get their bodies whipped into shape. With social media it’s even easier to market a healthy lifestyle and recruit folks to take classes from you. I know girls who have taught weight-lifting classes out of their garage and have been extremely successful. I also know some instructors use the warmer months to their advantage and host yoga at the park. A little creativity can go a long way.

Skills Required: Proper certification is obviously a must!

Virtual Assistant

Whether you’re helping with email organization, scheduling appointments, or updating databases, these are tasks business don’t want to hire an extra full-time person to do. They are also tasks that entrepreneurs don’t want to be spending their time doing and also tasks you can do from the comfort of your home.

Skills Required: Organization, administrative, good communication, efficient, and independent.

Pre-made Meals

Whether frozen or fresh, I would love to have the option of not cooking a couple of nights a week, but still know my family is getting the healthiest food possible. There’s a girl in my area who has a set menu for the week and you schedule ahead of time what nights you’ll be stopping to buy dinner and she has it ready for you. Doesn’t that sound like a dream come true, or what?

Skills Required: A good cook and the skills to market yourself.

Cake Maker

Are you everyone’s go-to for cakes and sweets? It’s hard to say no to a perfectly iced cupcake, and if you have the skills, people will pay top dollar! For our wedding we actually went on a local buy & sell to find someone to make our cupcakes. Because she didn’t have to pay the overhead of having a store front, she was able to charge quite a bit less than any local bakery.

Skills Required: A good baker and the skills to market yourself.

Create an Inspiring Home Office

October 4, 2016

Create an Inspiring Home Office That Screams #MOMBOSS!

One of the greatest things about working from a home office is the freedom and flexibility to work from a space that inspires you. Whether you need tunes to set the mood or you love a nice scented candle, you are free to surround yourself with those items that ignite that flame of motivation (pun intended).

My home office is still in the works. The previous owners of our new house used the space as a storage room, likely because of the unfinished floors, lack of windows and slanted roof that goes down to 1 ft at it’s lowest. But when I walked into this space I knew I’d make it my own and it would be perfect!

Here’s my home office must-haves:

Fur Rugs

What office can you have a white fur rug under your desk? One that you’re wearing slippers in, that’s what! Nothing says comfort to me like having my feet on a nice warm rug while I’m working away! This white fur rug from Wayfair speaks to me!

Diffusers or Candles

Most offices and workplaces are scent aware or scent free and I’ve always respected that rule. But when I’m at home I love to surround myself with natural fragrances that make me happy and productive, and what better way to set the tone of your work day than with some essential oil blends that motivate you and make you feel your best? I use this diffuser from Saje and love the way it fills the room with scent without being overpowering!

Inspiring Wall Art

Take some care in selecting images that inspire you and make you want to be in your office. Staring at blank walls is no fun. This is your own space, after all. There’s no building committee to tell you they don’t like your artwork! Rifle Paper Co is my go to for inspiring art prints. PRO TIP: greeting cards and gift wrap can be framed in white dollar store frames to make a cheap and easy piece of art for your wall!

Fancy Boss Chair

A comfy chair is key. I mean, you have to try and keep your butt in it for several hours at a time… it better be comfy. And cute doesn’t hurt. This green vegan leather chair with GOLD details from Wayfair is the ultimate boss chair! Just take my money, already! I need this chair in my life. Remember to think about ergonomics when selecting your office chair.

Lighting

When you work in an office building, the lighting can be so draining. Well guess what: you can make your space perfectly well lit to suit your needs! I love something like this flush mount light where it serves a purpose but is still cute. This light will give that great broad lighting to fill the room and you can still have a great lamp or some task lighting at your work-space.

Storage

I’m a huge fan of storage that can hide the stuff you want it to hide and show up those pieces that deserve to be shown off. This Ikea cabinet is a perfect combo piece and the bonus is that it doesn’t have much of a footprint! Perfect for smaller spaces.

What are your must-haves for your home office? What makes you come alive and inspire you to get your work done each day? Let me know in the comments!
