In the Trenches with Teething

Bedtime is a special time in our household. Every night around 6:30 pm, we start to wind down with a bath, some stories, and some cuddles. Our boys thrive on routine. But when Oliver started teething, bedtime became harder and it really threw our precious routine out of whack. He was hard to settle and even harder to keep asleep. In the Trenches with Teething | Mommyzoid

That was until I reached out to my mommy group on Facebook and asked if anyone had suggestions for natural relief from teething pain.

Over and over, my mom friends were saying Camilia drops.

At that stage in my mommy career, I’d never heard of it but was game to give it a shot! So I did what any other desperate mom would do — I sent my husband out to the 24-7 grocery store to pick up a package of Camilia. And maybe some chocolate for me.

And it worked. Both the Camilia and the chocolate!

I twisted off the top of the little tube and started squirting it into his mouth and within no time I could feel his whole body relax and he just melted into my arms, finally able to get the rest he needed. Which meant the whole family could sleep again!

You know that uncontrollable gut wrenching baby cry from teething pain that you can feel right to your bones? That was the end of it for us. As in, we had no idea Oliver’s teeth had popped through until we saw them or felt them. There were no tears and no drooling. Just smiles!

In the Trenches with Teething | Mommyzoid

Now that we have our second little bundle of joy, we aren’t scared or worried about teething. In fact, he’s already starting to show some early signs of teething and you better believe mommy is armed with her Camilia.

We actually gave him his first dose of Camilia this last week because the drooling has really started to pick up. He loved it! Knowing that this next stage won’t be anxiety inducing but instead filled with laughter and smiles has my mommy heart so excited. Bring on the teething, I say!

I remember how helpless I felt as a first-time mom, unable to soothe my baby who was clearly experiencing some unreal pain. I don’t know who cried more, him or I! It was such a relief to find a product, thanks to the recommendations from other moms, that was just as effective as it was safe for our little baby.

What has been really neat was after we tried Camilia we started exploring the rest of the homeopathic products Boiron makes like their children’s sugar-free cough medicine and even their adult products for cold and flu.

Anywhere we can substitute in something that’s more natural, I’m all in! And if it means bedtime is easier and we all get a little more sleep, well…it’s win-win.

Spring Inspired Looks for the Littles

There’s something about spring. Everything is feeling new again. Flowers are starting to pop up. Birds are starting to chirp again. It’s really quite a beautiful season to watch unfold before your very eyes.

Spring always feels like the perfect time to inject a little color back into our homes and wardrobes. There’s nothing I love more than getting Oliver a few new T’s and some shorts for the months ahead. If you’ve ever put a toddler in a snowsuit then you know how wonderful it is to throw on a T-shirt and shorts on your kiddo and head out the door. Pure bliss, I tell ya!

Here are a few of our favorite wardrobe pieces this spring! I can’t wait for the temperatures to go up so the boys can start wearing them.

Self-Care for Moms

If you’ve been following along with me through my second pregnancy and post-partum, you’ll know the general theme has been self-care. That has taken all kinds of forms from massage and chiropractor to a weekly group therapy session and exercising. Before becoming a mom, everything I did was self-care. My free time was filled with doing things that I enjoyed doing and I never had to schedule in “me-time”.

The notion of self-care may seem foreign to a new mom so she may need a little nudge in the right direction and Oh Mother Care Kits could be that nudge. Oh Mother Care Kits is a Canadian Subscription Box and the brain child of creator and curator Nicole Landry, a mom herself, who knows just how important self-care is for us moms and how a care package in the mail can make a new mom’s day week.

“I wanted the package to feel really personal, like every item was hand selected by a mom friend”

All the items in the kits are hand picked by Nicole. She says her goal is to have each package feel really personal, like every item was hand selected by a mom friend. Which is exactly how I felt when I opened my very own spring kit. Inside was filled with natural and fresh products from Canadian makers for me to pamper and spoil myself. Every item was just so pretty! I value attention to detail and I love pretty packaging. The fact that each item was visually pleasing was such a perk!

I ran myself a nice warm bath and poured in the sea salts which filled the room with the most divine citrus scent you’ve ever encountered. I made myself a piping hot cup of tea that had rose petals in it and busted open a yummy sea salt chocolate bar that I didn’t have to share with anyone! I cranked my favorite tunes, turned out the light and soaked to my heart’s content. After my at-home spa session, I was busy searching out all the new brands I’d been introduced to through the Oh Mother Care Kits and seeing what other goodies they make. A lot of these artisan-made products I would never have found if it wasn’t for all Nicole’s hard work in searching out and testing market-fresh products from across the country!

Oh Mother Care Kits is the perfect gift for a mom friend or for yourself. There are three options: quarterly subscription, annual subscription or a single box. Nicole also filled me in on some exciting new one-off boxes she has planned like the New Mama Care Kit and the Soon To Be Mama Care Kit, which will be a little more tailored to the needs of a woman in that stage of the game.

It can seem a little strange at first to do these things for ourselves. We may feel like we are being selfish or neglecting our family. After all, as a mother, we constantly are putting others needs before our own. One of my favorite quotes sums up self-care perfectly: You can’t pour from an empty cup. Every time I have a pang of guilt for doing something for me, I whisper that little mantra to myself. I’m the best mom I can be when I take the time to take care of myself.

If you want to give Oh Mother Care Kits a try for yourself, Nicole has provided me with a coupon code to save 10% on your first kit. Use ZOID10 at checkout. Visit to get yours today!

Say Goodbye to Ugly Nursing Bras

OK, so picture this: you’re going out for date night with the hubby for the first time since giving birth and you’re stoked to be back in a cute dress. But all your nursing bras are fugly and milk stained and sexy is not a feeling you get when you put them on. I hear ya, ladies. My selection of nursing bras was looking a little bleak, too.

Confession: I was rocking the same old nursing bras from TWO YEARS AGO. Guys, these bras are OLDER than my toddler. Ugh. So I think it goes without saying I was desperately in need of new nursing bras for this go around. I was approached by Hot Milk Lingerie and I am so thankful they sent me two of their amazing bras — the Forever Yours in Tigerlily and the Vitality in grey. Two amazingly comfortable bras. These bras are such good quality! You can really feel it in the material and the design. It just FITS. I’m not sure what took me so long to get myself into a really good quality nursing bra. It’s such an important time to be taking care of your breasts, too. Plus these boobs are housing my son’s food. I would wrap them in solid gold, if I could!

Speaking of fit, this is the first time I’ve ordered a bra online so thank god for their fit guide!

I’m so stoked that Hot Milk Lingerie has offered to give one of my lucky readers their own Forever Yours bra in Tigerlily. Hop over to Instagram and make sure you follow me (@mommyzoid), Hot Milk Lingerie (@hotmilklingerie), like the photo on my Instagram and tag some mom friends to let them know about the giveaway! That’s it!

And once you win you’ll be able to rock that first post-partum date night in style. Or look #OnFleek when you’re lounging with your littlest bae.

Now, what are you waiting for, GO ENTER!?!

Cloth Diapering our Newborn

We loved cloth diapering Oliver so much, we decided to do again this time around! Oliver has been out of diapers for a while so we are having to kind of re-learn everything all over again but it’s a lot like riding a bike! It all comes back quickly. What I’m finding though is since I’ve been a little removed from the cloth world, I’m enjoying seeing all the new products and features from our favorite brands!

Charlie Banana was always one of our favorite brands with Oliver and I was so excited to see that they launched a new insert! Their Deluxe Fleece Top Insert can be laid directly on top of the fleece lining of the diaper shell. Guys, do you know what this means? It means that when it comes time to change the diaper, you just have to take out the dirty insert and replace it with a clean one because the fleece on the diaper shell doesn’t get soiled! It’s genius. This means LESS laundry. Less to wash and less to dry. #MOMWIN!

I’ve always loved the inserts from Charlie Banana and have used them religiously! I find they are super absorbent and lock in a lot of pee but are still quite slim and trim, which means we get less bulk with equals pants fitting better! Yay!

One of the reasons I was initially drawn to Charlie Banana was their one size diapers with their bra strap-style adjusters instead of rise snaps on the front of the diaper. This was one of our favorite features for Oliver. Personally, I’m not a fan of rise snaps because I find they always come undone when I’m snapping the diaper onto the baby.

With this innovative bra strap-style adjuster, you’re able to fit the same one-size diaper on a newborn and a toddler. Now, how practical is that? One diaper can last you for literally years. In fact, my newborn is wearing diapers that our toddler wore. Talk about savings.

How cute is this new print! It comes in pink, too. It’s a favorite of mine.

I’m loving the changes Charlie Banana made to their inserts. They took something awesome and made it even more amazing. I love the options it gives us and the laundry it saves. Also, it means less wear and tear on the diapers, too! All around it’s a great change.

Are you planning to cloth diaper or are you a seasoned vet when it comes to fluff? Here’s some posts from our first foray with cloth: 5 Reasons We Love Charlie Banana, Cloth Diapering: A Dad’s Point of View, & Cloth Diapering at Daycare.

Babywearing With 2 Kids

With my first baby, babywearing was optional. It was nice to do. I enjoyed the extra snuggles and loved that I could get some housework done or work on my blog while the baby slept. It was win-win! But now that we’ve added another little peanut to our family, babywearing is a necessity. In order to get our family up and out the door in the mornings, the baby needs to be worn.

I had been fearing my first day alone with the two kids since I peed on that stick many moons ago. And when that day finally arrived, it was everything I imagined and more. Both kids needed my attention equally but I was finding it extremely hard to console my newborn while trying to play pretend with my toddler. That’s where the Solly saved my hide. I was able to securely tie Elliot onto me and Oliver was still able to have that one-on-one quality time with his momma that he so desperately needed. The transition from one kid to two is rough.

Babywearing With 2 Kids | Mommyzoid

The transition from one kid to two is rough. There’s no sugar coating it. But it has been made infinitely bearable with the butter-soft fabric of The Solly Baby Wrap. I love that I can be physically and emotionally available to both my sweet babies at the same time.

Babywearing With 2 Kids | Mommyzoid

Another thing that’s really helped Oliver adjust to having a little baby in the house is having him be involved as much as possible. Which started BEFORE the baby was born! We began telling him about babies and how to treat them as soon as we knew we were going to get another! He also enjoyed going to Midwife appointments and listening to the heartbeat.

Am I over reacting? Is the transition from one to two really stinkin’ difficult? I’ve got to say the best part is you know a thing or two about a thing or two and already have some practice with the basics….LIKE BABYWEARING. I’m so glad I knew about babywearing, wrapping and had this wrap at the ready for when little Elliot made his entrance into our family.

Newborn Musthaves

As you may remember when I was preparing for baby number 2 I was a tad worried because I hadn’t really bought anything new for his arrival, where as for the first I obviously did. I guess I just knew there wasn’t really much a newborn needs in those first few weeks that I couldn’t go out and buy if need be. Realistically all they need is food and diapers. Beyond that, it’s all just nice-to-haves. But there have been a few key pieces that have made our lives so much easier these first few weeks:

Aden + Anais – Silky Soft Swaddles in Midnight c/o – Can you ever have too many swaddles? The answer is no! They are the most versatile item we own. I rarely use them for what they were designed for. I use them as a light layer in the car seat, a nursing cover, a car seat canopy, a backdrop for cute photos, a play mat, and usually I can be caught using them to wipe up milk, snot and other bodily fluids! These swaddles make an appearance in my Instagram feed quite often because they are so stinkin’ stylish! I’m loving all the chic new color-ways Aden + Anais are doing these days!

Jujube – changing pad – This changing pad came with my diaper bag. I guess it’s meant for on the go changing, right? But we use it around the house. The bed, the carpet, the couch…. they all make perfect changing stations! But no one wants poop on their furniture. Plus it packs up and is perfect for on-the-go changing. It’s nice a soft and easy to wipe clean!

Old Navy – Patterned On-Piece 2-Pack – I love footie pajamas, I really do. But this is my second baby and practicality is scoring huge points this time around. Footie PJs can only last so long before the toes are busting at the seams. If there’s no foot, they don’t grow out of the length as quick! Plus Old Navy has some super cute styles to choose from right now.

Modern Barn – Ellie Ears Baby Head Support c/o – My kids both loved to fall asleep when we were out and when I’d look down at their tiny little bodies in their stroller or car seat with their little heads tilting over to the side, they’d look so uncomfortable. We are in love with our Ellie Ears and really love how they keep babies head nice and supported.

Boppy Nursing Pillow – To be honest with you I thought nursing pillows were silly. I mean, why couldn’t I just use a regular pillow? Well, regular pillows don’t wrap around your body and hug you in all the right places. I never knew I could love a pillow so much, you guys! I also love that as baby gets older you can prop them up against it. I usually prop baby next to me on the floor while I’m watching my shows or blogging. I just love products that have multiple uses!

Breastmilk Supply Increasing Smoothie

Breastmilk Supply Increasing Smoothie | Mommyzoid

Elliot has arrived! Just one week ago our boy decided it was time to enter the world. Our entire family is just in love with this little bean and it’s as if he’s always been here in our lives! It feels perfect and we feel complete. What also feels perfect and complete? Our breastfeeding relationship is getting off on the right foot, which is such a surprise for us. I was really expecting it to go south real quick. You can read about the issues I had with my first-born here.

Maybe it’s because I prepared for the worst case scenario. I had the number for a local lactation consultant pre-programmed into my phone and had even hired a doula to come check on me in the days following delivery to make sure my latch was looking OK and assess his latch. I also had alerted every health care professional that our child will likely have a tongue and/or lip-tie like our first-born did. I have been making everyone we encounter, including our baby chiropractor, check his little mouth and give us their opinion on the state of his mouth/our latch.

One way I’ve been ensuring things stay on this smooth course has been to keep my supply as high as it can be. Growth spurts are nasty and I’m already preparing for them by building my supply up with proper nutrition. I love my morning smoothie and after I have one I feel like I’ve given my body the best start I can for the day. Here’s my go-to recipe:

Throw all that in the blender until it’s the consistency you like, adding more milk or ice until it’s the way you like it.

I tend to make mine thick like ice cream and it legit tastes like a treat. When I’m craving something sweet, this is also a great alternative to a sugar-laden snack.

Let me know if you try this recipe or if you have something similar to this that helps keep your supply where it needs to be.

Breastfeeding Essentials

So there I am with a new baby on my chest and I’m like, “this should be easy!”. But I was wrong, for a plethora of different reasons. The main reason? I just wasn’t prepared. I had no idea how exhausting breastfeeding is. It boggled my brain that I could sit there for hours on end doing virtually nothing and get nothing done and be so exhausted. How? But most of all, why did no one warn me? Surely someone did?
Knowing what I know from my first foray with breastfeeding, I’m approaching things a bit differently this time around. Instead of filling my hospital bag with “baby stuff”, it’s basically jam-packed with every nipple related piece of equipment, ointment, or pad I could get my hands on. With my first child, I had brought so many outfits and I think I even brought Sophie the Giraffe and 10 types of soothers. I think I just had no idea how much our lives would revolve around feeding in those first few hours and days post-partum. There’s really no way of knowing until you’re there.
Here are some of the breastfeeding essentials I have on hand for those first few hours and days:
Breastfeeding Musthaves
Booby Boons Lactation Cookies // Yes, cookies that can increase your milk supply. There is a god! These are filled with ingredients that are galactagogues, which means they help stimulate milk production.
Apple Cheeks Waterproof Breast Pads // On a daily basis I probably changed my breast pad up to 5 times a day, which means if you go the disposable route, you’re looking at a lot of waste and a lot of $! These waterproof one by Apple Cheeks are my fave because they are made from the same material as cloth diapers, so you won’t get any leakage. They are well worth the investment!
Medela Nipple Shield // My son had a lip & tongue tie that was undiagnosed and that’s why I experienced a lot of pain in my first weeks. The pain was so excruciating (it shouldn’t have been, but I had no idea what I was going through wasn’t normal) that the only time I could get some reprieve was when I wore my shield. It was great when I had cracks that I was trying to heal!
Avent Manual Breast Pump // This was my savior! Getting out of the house, if even for just a quick run for a coffee, is something you think you might like, pumps will become your friend. Being able to leave a few oz of milk with my husband and the baby while I run to the grocery store or just step away for my sanity’s sake was a blessing.
Traditional Medicinals Mother’s Milk Tea // Tea that increases your milk production. mmhm! There are a number of natural ways to increase your milk production and this tea contains a few of those ingredients.
The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding // This is my breastfeeding bible. Instead of running to google, this is where I run. You can get a lot of mixed advice or anecdotal responses from a quick google search, but reliable information can be hard to come by. That’s why I keep this ebook on my cell phone so it’s with me whenever I have a question.
S’well Water Bottle // Staying hydrated is so important. It feels like you’re doing nothing but really, you’re loosing so much fluids that it’s really important to stay on top of your H2O intake.

Gift Guide for Toddlers

Toddler Gift Guide | Mommyzoid
These are some of the greatest gifts we’ve given Oliver or plan to give him. I love giving him quality gifts that will last through multiple stages (& even multiple kids!).
Kid Size Owl Mug // Our little guy loves to have some “tea” (usually hot water and honey) before bed. He feels like a special little big kid when he and the adults are having a cup of tea together!
Stuffed Swan // Every time we go to Chapter’s Oliver packs this swan around. He thinks it’s hilarious. I think he might just need to wake up on Christmas morning to this little swan under the tree.
The Darkest Dark // Our favorite book right now! We read it at least once a day in this house. It’s all about astronauts and your dreams that actually can come true.
Mini Kick Seat 3 in 1 // The greatest scooter ever, it grows with your kid! Oliver got this scooter for his first birthday, when he couldn’t even walk! He pushed himself around on it, using the seat. The seat is now off and soon we will have to change out the handle for the taller size option that comes with it. Such good value for the money! We will have this scooter in our family for a long time.
Woodland Animal Puzzle // Nothing better than doing a big puzzle together on the floor! I love that these puzzle pieces are perfect for tiny hands and they are durable (because some go in the mouth, of course!)
Bath Toys // I’m done with gross bath toys that fill with water and get disgusting. These bath toys drain really easily so they don’t fill up with water and can’t get gross. Plus they are made with natural rubber and they look cute.
Kid Size Cleaning Set // Oliver is at the age where we wants to help do everything like vacuum, load the dishwasher… fly at it buddy! They love feeling needed.
What are your must haves for the toddler on your shopping list?
