DIY Thrift Store Find - #12MonthsofDIY

There’s nothing a can of gold spray paint can’t make look like new again, right? I went into Value Village looking for something to take from drab to fab with my trusty can of gold metallic spray paint from Rust-Oleum and when I locked eyes with this wood treasure box, I knew my paint was going to make it the perfect addition to the top of my dresser.

I’ve only become a fan of thrifting in the last several years. When I was younger I remember there was such a stigma around used clothing. My mom would bring me home some gems she scored at Value Village and I was always scared someone would find out it was *gasp* used. I’m so thankful that stigma is disappearing! It’s cool to give something a new life. Did you know that we throw away 81 lbs of clothing a year per person in North America?

Walking around Value Village searching for my piece to fix up was no easy feat. I mean, I literally couldn’t stop picking up things and putting them in my basket. There were so many unique items that got my DIY wheels spinning! You never know what’s around the next corner which to me is so much fun. Plus I always feel a sense of pride knowing I’m saving something from a landfill and giving it a new life! April is Earth Month, after all!

All I used was a can of Rust-Oleum Metallic Spray in Gold, painters tape, and some scrap paper and cardboard to protect from over spray.

I’m a huge fan of this spray paint. You can basically take anything from the house-wares section at Value Village and give it a coat of gold spray paint and it will look like you got it from your favorite high-end decor store!

I am so glad you discovered thrift store shopping. Your project idea is very unique and very creative. It is amazing what a coat of spray paint can do to an item to freshen it up and give it a whole new look.

  • That gold spray paint is lovely and your box turned out beautifully. I really like how you styled it. As a teen, I probably wouldn’t have worn anything my mom got me at the thrift store, but my friend and I would go there in search of plaid coats, etc. I wore many cast-off men’s jackets in my rebellious teen phase. 😉

Beautiful and very classy! I’m so glad that thrifting is now a very accepted practice, it’s actually quite trendy now, thankfully.

So I see you bought the Kylie Jenner lip kits! Are they any good?!
The display box is great. I love those for displaying all kinds of moments, especially at Christmas!

SO cute! This would be so perfect for my daughter’s bedroom!

Got to say nothing goes together better than thrift store finds and spray paint! Great project, love the gold.

Love the gold. All things are better with a can of spray paint!

This is awesome! I totally agree – gold spray paint can work wonders!
