Top 6 WordPress Plugins for Your Blog

January 2, 2015

Top 6 WordPress Plugins

If you self host on WordPress, you have the ability to add some pretty cool plugins to your website or blog to really jazz it up, personalize it, and amp up its functionality. If you haven’t quite delved into the world of WordPress plugins, I’ll warn you it can be a tad confusing and there is a bit of a learning curve to installing them and getting them going. Plugins are by far the biggest perk of self hosting with WordPress.I’m going to share which ones I use with my blog.

1. Click To Tweet

My bloggy friend Sarah from Glam Granola Geek recently used this plugin in a giveaway she was doing and I fell in love with it! Click To Tweet seamlessly places a pre-written tweet into your post saying whatever you’d like it to say, including a link back to the blog post it’s been placed in. Once installed and activated, the plugin places a little twitter-esque logo into your toolbar above your blog post so you can easily add your Click To Tweets while you’re creating your post. It’s extremely user friendly.

Here’s Click To Tweet in action:

2. Hello Bar

This plugin allows you to create a bar at the top of your blog so your readers can subscribe to your blog. This allows you access to their name and email address to send fun things directly to their inbox. Hello Bar works seamlessly with companies like Mail Chimp for adding addresses to your lists. Hello Bar can also be customized to have a link to a special contest or giveaway instead of a subscribing to emails.

Here’s what it looks like on my blog:

Hello Bar adds a place for your readers to subscribe or you can add a link to a certain page or contest

3. Scroll To Top Bottom

My husband suggested to me to add a button on my page so when you’re scrolling through you can click the button and pop back up to the top of the page without scrolling all the way back up. Scroll To Top Bottom integrates seamlessly with mobile and looks really nice.

Here’s the little magic button in action:

4. Disqus Comment System

Instead of using WordPress’ commenting system, I’ve switched to Disqus. It’s very popular and it can be connected to readers existing social media accounts. Since installing I haven’t had one single piece of spam slip past and I was getting a lot of spam previously. When you moderate your comments, you’re redirected to Disqus’ external website.

5. Advanced Ads

After trial and error with about a dozen different ad plugins I settled on Advanced Ads. It was the most user friendly plugin I could find that I could easily have my ads rotate with each new visit to my page. The ability to rotate your ads is great.

6. WordPress SEO by Yoast

This plugin helps you figure out your SEO for each post and page. SEO stands for search engine optimization. It helps you optimize search engines ability to find your page and have it close to the top of the pile by using key words. It tells you you strong your SEO is and gives you hints on how you could up your SEO. WordPress SEO by Yoast is very user friendly!

Here’s how it looks in use:

(you’re in luck, right now it’s 20% off with coupon code NEWYEARNEWBLOG) If you want to take your blog from zero to 100 this year, Abby’s ebook* will get you going in the right direction. & even if you’ve been dabbling in the blogging world for quite some time, you’re sure to learn something new within each chapter.

NEWYEARNEWBLOG

I’ve compiled a list of common blogger resolutions with some tips on how to achieve that goal. Remember: A goal without a plan is just a wish!

New Years Resolutions for Your Blog

1. Harness the power of social media.

It’s free advertising and if you learn to use it properly, it can really work hard for you, even when you’re not around. You can automate Facebook, Twitter, & Instagram posts very simply.

2. Build meaningful relationships with brands and bloggers.

When you’re reaching out to brands and bloggers, be authentic and be you! It’s important to sound like a real person and not just send out carbon copy emails to every single company and blogger.

3. Find a manageable posting schedule.

Figure out what you can manage and stick to it. Consistency is key! If you don’t think you can keep up posting 5 days a week long term, don’t even start!

4. Creative, crisp, & clear pictures + graphics.

Take photos as you go, when doing a project. Take too many, because you never know what you’ll need! I always forget this tip. and regret it!

5. Monetize

Did you skip to this tip? Abby has some great tips in her ebook* on how to monetize your blog, whether it’s sponsored posts or advertising in your side bar. From first hand experience, her tips and ideas for making money do work. But remember to concentrate your efforts on CONTENT. Content is what brings in the traffic!

If you’re looking to make this year your blogs best year yet, do what I did and invest in Abby’s ebook, Building A Framework*. Until January 3rd at 11:59 pm EST, you can get it for 20% off with the code NEWYEARNEWBLOG.

What are you doing to make this your blog’s best year yet? What lessons have you learned?

HTML “Grab My Button” for your blog

December 12, 2014

Attract new followers to your blog with this trick - HTML "Grab My Button" for your blog via www.mommyzoid.ca

No doubt you’ve seen these handy dandy little guys on the side of many blogs or in link-ups. Adding just a short piece of code gives followers the ability to easily copy the code and add your blog link and image to their blog and in turn, come back week after week while advertising your blog on theirs. Have you ever wanted to put one on your blog but thought, “I can’t code!!”? Never fear I’m going to teach you how to make your very own. I promise it’s not too hard. If you can’t figure it out, I’d be happy to help you out! If anyone knows what these are called, let me know in the comments! I keep calling it a “Grab My Button” and everyone seems to know what I’m talking about so I’ll go with it!

Attract new followers to your blog with this trick - HTML "Grab My Button" for your blog via www.mommyzoid.ca

Here’s the exact piece of code I used to create the one on the sidebar on my blog:

<center><a href=”http://www.mommyzoid.ca” target=”_blank”><img alt=“mommyzoid” src=”http://www.mommyzoid.ca/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/mommyzoid-button.png”/></a></center>

Now I’m going to highlight in red everything you are going to want to change to make it work for you:

<center><a href=”http://www.mommyzoid.ca” target=”_blank”><img alt=“mommyzoid” src=”http://www.mommyzoid.ca/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/mommyzoid-button.png“/></a></center>

Don’t be intimidated by all the red! I’ll break it down for you.

Where it says http://www.mommyzoid.ca, swap out mine and put your full blog URL including the http://!!

Where it says Mommyzoid, replace it with the name of your blog just to keep things simple. This is just what with come up when your cursor rests over your logo or whichever image you decided to use.

Where it says http://www.mommyzoid.ca/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/mommyzoid-button.png, replace it with the URL of your image. if you’re using WordPress, I’ll show you how you can find your image URL very simply.

On your dashboard you’re going to go over to the sidebar and click Media.

Either add a new photo or select one you’ve already uploaded to your Media Library.

When you select the image you want to use, your Attachment Details will open up. This is where you will find the URL for address for the image.

Copy the full URL address and insert it into the HTML code from above.

VOILA. You should have your HTML code to place into a text widget in your sidebar or in a post on your blog. Remember, you’re going to insert it via the text tab, not the visual tab when creating a post on WordPress.

Easy peasy? Feel free to comment below with any questions you have or if you have any road blocks.

7 Ways to Get Noticed in the Blog World

November 21, 2014

7 Ways to get noticed in the blog world - www.mommyzoid.ca

I got my first Blogger account in high school, about 10 years ago now. Obviously I hoped no one from my real life would find it and read it. Fast forward to now where I’m in a place where I want my blog to be read and I want it to be shared. I found myself searching out bloggers who I followed, admired, and trusted for some advice. That’s when I discovered one of my favourite bloggers Abby from Just A Girl and Her Blog wrote an ebook* titled Building a Framework all about how she began earning money within her first year of blogging. Now making money isn’t my goal but the fact that she was making money meant she was being noticed.

In her ebook*, Abby shares so many tips and tricks like how to get more traffic to your blog from Pinterest and how to develop a relationship with a brand. I found myself studying her ebook like a textbook with a pad of paper next to me jotting down all the things I needed to implement right away. Eventually I would have figured out most of her tips by trial and error and over the course of a few years, but reading her book gave me that inside knowledge to help boost my blog to a place where I had only dreamed it could be within days.

After reading her ebook and actioning as many of her tips as I could, I developed my own little list of tips that have worked for me when it comes to networking and building relationships with other bloggers and brands:

1. WRITE DOWN YOUR GOALS

I am a list maker and I love crossing things off a list. It doesn’t feel done until I can slash a big line through it. When I got serious about my blog I wrote down my list of goals so I could see them and scratch them off when they are met.

2. APPROACH THOSE YOU ADMIRE

If you look up to them and admire their techniques, talk to them! I guarantee they will share some tips with you if you ask nicely. I suggest building a list of people you admire and check in on them often. Try and figure out what they are doing that’s drawing you in!

3. REACH OUT TO OTHER BLOGGERS

There is power in numbers! I went onto Facebook to find private groups for bloggers in my area. I had no idea I’d actually find one. These other bloggers have such a wide range of skill sets and come from different backgrounds. It’s so nice to finally find that group of people who understand the bloggy world. It takes a certain type of person to want to blog so to have that group of people to bounce ideas off of and not feel silly is phenomenal.

4. HELP OTHERS

Don’t horde all the know-how, share the wealth! I approached the hosts of a new link party and asked them if they wanted a “Grab a Button” made for them because I noticed they didn’t have one. They explained to me they had been trying to get one set up with no luck and were so thankful I offered to help! Now I have 3 amazing women I’ve broken the ice with and know I can approach if I ever have a question when it came to blogging.

5. SAY “THANK-YOU”

Nothing feels better than hearing a genuine thank-you! I just finished a batch of real, hand-written, thank-you cards to mail off to ladies who participated in my Holiday Gift Guide. It meant a lot to me that they supported my idea and shared it with their followers. Remember in the beginning when I said that my whole goal was for people to READ my work?Without these ladies help, I wouldn’t have reached that goal with that post.

6. MONEY IS NOT THE BE-ALL END-ALL

If you’re doing it for the money, stop right here and don’t pass go because there won’t be $200 to collect. When it comes to blogging, focus on content. CONTENT. CONTENT. Once you have great content under your belt and you’ve developed your niche, then start to think about monetizing but even then, content is king!

7. BE YOU

It will be easier to maintain your “voice” and come up with ideas to blog about if you’re using your voice. There are many ways to let your voice shine through. Abby gives an amazing tip for writing in your own voice but I wont spoil it for you!

Hop on over to Just a Girl and Her Blog and buy Building A framework*.
